If You Give a Dog a Donut... Another Birthday Party!

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

I was asked to contribute a few thoughts on children's birthday parties for our amazing local mom's magazine, M for the May issue! My advice was this: pick a couple things that you do well, and remember that you're trying to make sweet memories for your kids. It's not about doing things in a huge, over-the-top way, it's just about creating something fun to celebrate a special time in their life!

Recently, my little Lucia (the eccentric, kooky, hilarious middle child) turned four... and I worked really hard at taking my own advice! For her party, we kept things simple and sweet and it was so much fun! A brand-new park near us was the perfect Saturday morning location, and we based the party around her current favorite book- If You Give a Dog a Donut, by Laura Numeroff. We served donuts, apple juice, and everybody's favorite local milk.

I wanted this party to have a retro-picnic kind of style. Pops of bright red and aqua blues were perfect because of the artwork on the cover of the book. I'll let the pictures do some of the talking! :)

A Kansas City favorite... amazing branding on the cute glass bottles from our own Shatto Dairy!

{Donut seeds... frosted cheerios! Cute printable from Cheeky Paperie}

At the last minute, she begged for a cake with a donut on top. Whole Foods it is... I was not up for baking.

A cute dog pinata was a perfect addition!

Picnic blankets and story time!
